Back Home Safe and Beyond - the future of offshore health & safety
Monday 14th April, 2014, 12:30 pm
The death of four offshore workers last August, when their Super Puma helicopter ditched off the Shetland Coast, was the fifth such incident since 2009 and increased the fatality count to twenty.
In the aftermath of this latest tragedy Unite was inundated by calls from offshore workers expressing their concerns and fears about the safety of offshore helicopter transfers to and from installations in the UK Continental Shelf. As a result, Unite launched its Back Home Safe campaign, petitioning and surveying over 3,500 offshore workers and their collective voice was loud and clear: confidence in helicopter transfers is shattered.
Unite believes that this cannot go on. The UK oil & gas industry, its regulators and politicians must intervene and help bring about change to offshore helicopter safety; change that tackles this crisis in confidence and helps ensure more workers get back home safe in the future.
This special fringe at STUC Conference 2014 brings together voices from workers, trade unions, the law and politics to discuss the ways and means a safer future can be achieved.
